Hurricanes vow to lift against Jaguares

The Hurricanes’ first visit to Buenos Aires has come with a promise they’ll improve on their lacklustre opening Super Rugby loss.

Assistant coach John Plumtree says the team review of their 21-19 loss to the Bulls in Pretoria wasn’t pleasant viewing and has helped sharpen the senses ahead of their match against the Jaguares on Sunday (NZT).

It is the team’s debut in Argentina but Plumtree says there won’t be a lot of time spent sampling the sights and sounds.

The focus will be on fixing shortcomings exposed by an impressive young Bulls side.

“You look for reasons why but on the day the Bulls were good enough to beat us and they played pretty well in patches, like we did,” Plumtree said.

“We weren’t quite patient enough when we had the ball and, when we didn’t, we didn’t have the intensity that we normally have.

“That’s disappointing because we worked pretty hard to build up to that game.”

Plumtree says it’s important not to dwell on defeat so early in the season.

He could point to recent history to back up his argument.

The Hurricanes produced one of the worst performances in their history when routed 52-10 by the Brumbies to kick-start the 2016 campaign.

Personnel-wise it should be an improved Hurricanes team, with brilliant fullback Jordie Barrett having joined the team early in the week after seven months on the sideline.

Older brother and All Blacks playmaker Beauden should also start, having come off the bench in Pretoria.

Another ace up the Hurricanes’ sleeve is the return to fitness of dynamic young prop Alex Fidow, who missed out on a debut in the Bulls clash after picking up a leg infection.
