Wales have asked assistant coach Rob Howley to lead the side on their three-Test tour to Australia while Warren Gatland recovers from his accident in New Zealand.
Gatland had his legs put in casts and needs reconstructive surgery on his right heel following a fall, so the Welsh Rugby Union has promoted Howley to the role of caretaker coach.
The WRU says Gatland has endorsed the decision and Howley will take charge for the first time with a June 2 meeting with the Barbarians.
Wales then plays its first ever three-Test series against the Wallabies, plus a midweek fixture against the Brumbies after the first Test.
Gatland could join the squad for the final two Tests but only to support Howley.
