Holland to make long-awaited Sevens return

Australian men’s rugby sevens captain Lewis Holland will play his first tournament since injury put him out during the Rio Olympics this weekend.

The skipper has been named in Australia’s side for the Silicon Valley Sevens, with his return coming a month before the World Series opener in Dubai.

The 24-year-old had to bow out of last year’s Olympics due to a hamstring injury and went on to snap his achilles tendon in October.

Coach Andy Friend says Holland, whom he made captain after he became injured, has been performing brilliantly in the role on and off the field.

“We will look after him this weekend – we have been patient all along and that won’t change this weekend,” he told rugby.com.au.

The Australian side won two tournaments in October, the invitational Oktoberfest 7s in Munich – their first tournament win since 2012 – and the Central Coast Sevens.

After Silicon Valley, their pre-season continues on November 10-11 with the Oceania Sevens in Fiji.
