Former Wallabies and Western Force forward Matt Hodgson is prepared to come out of retirement and play in the proposed Indo-Pacific Rugby Championship.
The rugged backrower retired after the Western Force completed their 2017 Super Rugby schedule and before they were cut from the competition.
Hodgson, who was with the Force throughout their 12-season existence, hasn’t been able to stay out of the action for long.
He will be part of the Barbarians side playing the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
“I’m looking forward to putting the boots on again, I’ve had a couple of runs with the classic Wallabies,” Hodgson told AAP.
“It’s a hard thing to retire but I think the way the season was with the Force I needed to finish Super Rugby when I did.
“The body is pretty good and I’m looking forward to playing again, because it’s exciting to be in a group of teammates again and that’s what you miss.”
Hodgson, 36, feels he still has enough in the tank to play in the IPRC, which mining billionaire Andrew Forrest plans to get up and running in either 2018 or 2019.
The mooted competition would include the Force and five overseas teams.
“Hopefully when the new comp starts I might put the boots on and help one of the countries, or one of the teams in that,” Hodgson said.
“If an opportunity arises whether that be overseas or in Perth, I’ll definitely put my hand up and help out there.”
While Hodgson hasn’t had the issue of trying to find a new club, he feels for old teammates, who have been forced to look elsewhere.
“You think of someone like (prop) Pek Cowan that’s put 12 years into the club, and now he’s sort of stuck in limbo,” Hodgson said.
“There’s even people now that had contracts with the Western Force for next year and now they can’t get placement anywhere.
“The way they’ve gone through this process for a long period is tough on them and draining.”
