Hill keeps Rebels rugby lineup

Melbourne Rebels coach Damien Hill isn’t about to make wholesale changes for the Super Rugby clash with NSW despite his team’s “consistently inconsistent” performances.

After outclassing the Blues at home, the Rebels delivered their worst showing of the season in losing to the Brumbies 37-6 in Canberra.

With four tries in 20 minutes, the game was effectively over by halftime and Hill was scathing in his post-match assessment.

The Rebels’ next assignment isn’t much easier as they take on NSW in Sydney on Saturday night.

Melbourne will be without hard-running centre Mitch Inman, who broke his hand during the Brumbies match and is expected to be out for at least three week.

But Hill doesn’t plan to put the broom through the side, although burly winger Cooper Vuna is available after a two-match suspension for a dangerous tackle.

“There will be some changes but reasonably minor,” Hill said on Monday.

“Cooper’s available and he’s trained well and has put himself in the best position he can to be selected.”

Hill didn’t expect the match to carry any extra feeling for either side despite the eye-gouging allegations from their round two match, with SANZAR still to fully resolve the matter.

NSW centre Tom Carter accused Adam Byrnes of eye-gouging with the Rebels lock found guilty and then cleared on appeal.

Byrnes was then charged with misconduct after bitterly criticising Carter in an interview.

SANZAR judicial officer Nigel Hampton has reserved his decision after hearing the misconduct charge last week.

“Adam’s not playing and Tommy’s motivations don’t usually revolve around individuals so I don’t expect it will have any effect at all,” Hill said.

In that round two match NSW completely outplayed Melbourne to win 35-19 and Hill said it was a big test for his players, particularly coming off the disappointment of the Brumbies game.

“Having played a poor game the week before, if we do bounce back, if we can beat a team the pedigree of the Waratahs at home than that will speak volumes for the character of this team.

“It’s very important for us.”
