Hansen opts for Weepu for All Blacks

New All Blacks coach Steve Hansen’s first squad features seven new caps and the inclusion of Piri Weepu over Crusaders halfback Andy Ellis.

The 30-strong squad for the three-Test series against Ireland which begins at Eden Park on June 9 was named in Auckland on Sunday.

Weepu, with 56 Tests to his credit, was in outstanding form last year as the All Blacks won their first Rugby World Cup since 1987.

But the former Hurricanes halfback, now playing for the Blues, piled on weight during an extended post-World Cup break, and has since struggled to find fitness and form.

At the All Blacks wider training group camps, Hansen said Weepu had been set training targets which he had to meet by last Tuesday.

Hansen says he and fellow selectors Ian Foster and Grant Fox have opted for a mix of youth and experience.

“We have selected a really balanced squad of experienced players who have played with distinction over a number of Tests, and a group of young players with huge potential,” he said.

Hika Elliot comes into the squad as injury cover for hooker Keven Mealamu, who is recovering from a calf injury.

New Zealand squad: Israel Dagg, Hosea Gear, Zac Guildford, Ben Smith, Julian Savea, Tamati Ellison, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Sonny Bill Williams, Beauden Barrett, Dan Carter, Aaron Cruden, Aaron Smith, Piri Weepu, Sam Cane, Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Adam Thomson, Victor Vito, Brodie Retallick, Luke Romano, Sam Whitelock, Ali Williams, Wyatt Crockett, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, Ben Tameifuna, Tony Woodcock, Andrew Hore, Keven Mealamu.
