Inspired by New Zealand’s World Cup triumph, Zac Guildford has vowed to give up alcohol before resuming his Super Rugby career with the NSW Waratahs.

Former All Blacks winger Guildford admits drinking has remained a problem since cutting short a stint with French club Clermont and returning to New Zealand this year.

The 26-year-old told Seven Sharp that his contract with the Waratahs represents a final opportunity in his career.

“This is the last chance saloon for me and if I stuff it up, it’s game over,” he said.

“I’ve had so many problems with alcohol. Look, I’ve still made mistakes this year to be honest.

“I don’t blame anyone else but myself. It’s either one beer or 24 beers and I’ve got to look to take some responsibility.”

Off-field incidents have plagued Guildford, who played 10 Tests from 2009 to 2012 and clocked up 79 Super Rugby games for the Hurricanes and Crusaders before leaving for France.

He vowed to clean up his act when he returned home in May and signed an NPC contract with Hawke’s Bay.

However, he admitted to relapses, including a binge after his provincial team Hawke’s Bay lost the Ranfurly Shield to Waikato seven weeks ago, which resulted in a suspension by team management.

He says the dominant display of the All Blacks at the Rugby World Cup has convinced him once and for all do give up booze.

“My feet got itchy, I would have loved to be out there. I definitely want to play good rugby again,” he said.

“I don’t want to live the life I’ve been living for the last six years because it’s been pretty average.”

A charity boxing bout in December has also kept him focused.
