Giteau to face Smith in European Cup semi

Two former Wallabies will meet in an all-French European Challenge Cup semi-final, after Toulon defeated holders, and three-time winners Harlequins 37-8 in the quarter-finals to book their date with Stade Francais.

Centre Matt Giteau booted a penalty and a conversion for Toulon and will now line up against Stade recruit, and countryman George Smith in the grand final qualifier.

Adding to the green and gold flavour is Stade’s Australian coach, Michael Cheika.

Toulon out-scored injury-hit Quins three tries to one with Steffon Armitage, Benjamin Lapyeyre and Sebastien Tillous all crossing with Danny Care replying with a late consolation for the English side

Jonny Wilkinson added five penalties and a conversion to go with Giteau’s contribution for the 2010 runners-up.

Quins had gone into the match in France looking under-powered with star Kiwi fly-half Nick Evans and captain Chris Robshaw both missing through injury.

France could have four teams in the semi-finals if Biarritz defeat Wasps on Saturday and Brive see off the Scarlets on Sunday.

Stade Francais had made sure of their place in the last four with a 22-17 win over Exeter on Thursday.
