Gatland unveils his Chiefs coaching staff

Warren Gatland will have a stable group of Kiwi assistant coaches at his disposal when he takes charge of the Chiefs for next year’s Super Rugby campaign.

Long-serving Wales coach Gatland begins an unusual four-year contract next season when he coaches the Chiefs but then leaves them in 2021 to take up his post as British and Irish Lions coach for their tour of South Africa.

That season is likely to see one of his assistants take charge.

The coaching support staff unveiled on Friday comprises five names familiar to Chiefs supporters, having served as assistants previously.

Neil Barnes (forwards), Tabai Matson (defence), Roger Randle (attack), Nick White (scrum) and Andrew Strawbridge (resource coach) will be joined by a new face in former Chiefs five-eighth David Hill.

Gatland said he was pleased with the proven quality of his support staff, along with the promotion of Hill, who has coached in Japan.

All of New Zealand’s playing squads for 2020 will be finalised on Tuesday next week.
