The Western Force have signed Australian Sevens star Junior Rasolea for the next two Super Rugby seasons.
Rasolea, who started in the centres for Fiji during their best-placed finish (sixth) at his second IRB Junior World Championship in 2011, has been a regular with the Aussie Thunderbolts since being recruited by national Sevens coach Michael O’Connor last year.
The 21-year old, 102kg powerhouse went to the same Brisbane high school as David Pocock, and said the Force skipper’s foray into Super Rugby and Wallabies ranks served as an inspiration.
“I remember seeing clips of him at school playing inside centre – he was a star and someone I looked up to,” Rasolea said.
“I’ve seen how players like him and James O’Connor have developed and what they’ve gone on to after starting with the Force and it seemed like the best place for me to develop my rugby.”
Force chief executive Vern Reid said Rasolea’s size, strength and dynamic pace would serve the franchise well.
“Junior’s another player who’s benefited from coming through the Sevens pathway but has shown through his time with the Fiji Under 20s and the University club in Brisbane that he has a considerable amount to offer in the 15-a-side game,” Reid said.
Rasolea’s signing comes after the Force secured the services of Cheetahs five-eighth Sias Ebersohn for the 2013 campaign.
The Force are not expected to name their new coach until next month.
The likes of John Kirwan, Michael Cheika, Tim Lane, Phil Blake, former Reds coach Phil Mooney, ex-Brumbies mentor Andy Friend and former Force assistant coach John Mulvihill are rumoured to be in the mix to replace the departed Richard Graham.
