The Western Force have re-signed in-form lock Hugh McMeniman for a further two seasons, tying him to the Super Rugby club until the end of 2015.
McMeniman has rocketed back into Wallabies contention after a bright start to the season, but is in doubt for Saturday night’s home clash with the Crusaders due to a shoulder injury.
The 29-year-old returned to Australian rugby this season after three years with Japanese club Kubota Spears, and is a strong chance of representing the Wallabies against the Lions later this year if his shoulder injury isn’t serious.
McMeniman, who played the last of his 21 Tests in 2008, is still in negotiations with the Australian Rugby Union.
But the man nicknamed ‘Madness’ said he was always keen to re-sign with the Force.
“The direction we’re heading in is very positive. Already this season we’ve taken a number of big steps as a side,” McMeniman said.
“There’s a clear direction in terms of where we want to end up and we’re on our way to achieving that.
“While there was interest elsewhere, I was always keen to stay with the Force.
“My partner Georgie and I really like living in Perth.
“We’ve got some great friends here now and I know it’s the best place for me to continue my footy.”
Meanwhile, Force forwards coach Nick Stiles will join the Queensland Reds for the 2014 season.
Stiles informed the club that a desire to return his young family to Brisbane after seven years in Japan and Perth was the key factor for the move back to Queensland.
