Force aim to achieve new win record

The Western Force will be aiming to create a slice of history this Super Rugby season, but it doesn’t necessarily involve a finals finish.

The Force are yet to secure a finals berth since their inception in 2006, and are favourites to win the wooden spoon this year in some betting markets.

Their best season came in 2008, when they won a franchise record seven wins.

The past three years have been slim pickings, with last season yielding just four wins and a draw.

However, coach Michael Foley is confident his team will make significant improvements this year, and says it’s not out of the question for them to secure a finals berth if they can make a fast start.

But getting to eight wins will be the first goal.

“This team in its eight-year history has never won eight games,” Foley said.

“If we want to earn our way into the finals, there are some milestones we’ve got to pass that this team has never achieved before.

“You’ll never concede as a team or a coach that it’s too early (to make finals). You want it now.

“The proof in the pudding will be in the first five or six games of the season.

“Last year we took too long to build into it.

“We got three wins and a draw from our last six games. We need to be able to achieve that type of consistency up front.

“If we can do that, we will be well on track to potentially achieving what you’re talking about.”

The Force start their season with a daunting assignment against the star-studded Waratahs in Sydney on Sunday, before home games against the Brumbies and Rebels.

The Force then hit the road for a clash with the Highlanders, before returning to Perth to face the Chiefs, who are defending champions.

Foley knows his team are capable of causing big upsets after watching them beat the Reds, Brumbies and Crusaders last season.

But he says it’s critical for them to be able to lift in other, less high profile games.
