Foley allays further Waratahs injury fears

NSW Waratahs coach Michael Foley has allayed fears of further injuries after Wallabies Berrick Barnes and Adam Ashley-Cooper failed to train with the team five days before their opening round Super Rugby clash with Queensland.

The Waratahs are already resigned to being without wingers Drew Mitchell and Lachie Turner, lock Dan Vickerman and captain and blindside flanker Rocky Elsom for Saturday’s clash at ANZ Stadium.

Five-eighth Barnes, who left the field early in Friday night’s trial with Tonga due to a groin issue, and fullback Ashley-Cooper, didn’t train with the main group on Monday.

“A couple of guys had niggles and those guys did rehab today in favour of being 100 per cent fit for Saturday,” Foley said.

Asked specifically about Barnes, Foley said “we’re hoping that everybody will train fully tomorrow.”

He wasn’t overly concerned about Ashley-Cooper, who made his debut for the Waratahs against Tonga.

“In his first game he got through 60 minutes of work, and there’s a couple of niggles out of that,” Foley said.
