Folau says Wallabies need to back up

Hat-trick hero Israel Folau says the Wallabies’ impressive display of running rugby in their 52-17 win over Argentina should be a blueprint for future success.

The Australians terrorised the Pumas’ defence in their Rugby Championship clash in Rosario with playmakers Quade Cooper and Will Genia pulling the strings for Australia’s seven-try haul.

Former Test rugby league star Folau, who had scored four tries in his eight-game rugby career, almost doubled his tally and also set up a try for winger Adam Ashley-Cooper.

Fullback predecessor Chris Latham’s four-try haul against Argentina in Brisbane in 2000 was in his sights but the final try wasn’t to be.

Folau said he sensed something building during the warm-up in front of the hot-blooded Estadio Gigante de Arroyito stadium crowd.

“The boys were very passionate. I could feel that right from the start in the warm-up,” the 24-year-old said.

“We showed that on the field there so it was a pretty special win.”

Folau was quick to heap praise on his teammates, with the Wallabies’ forwards working tirelessly to give their backs quick ball and the backs finally clicking with well-timed passes and runs.

“I guess I was in the right place at the right time,” said Folau.

“It’s always good to get a meat pie but three tonight was really special and I wouldn’t have done it without the team performance.

“The forwards were great tonight and laid the platform for us guys out wide who finished the job.”

After mixed success pursuing a kicking game throughout the tournament, the Wallabies looked comfortable playing a ball in hand style, with Cooper spiralling out long, accurate passes and Folau said it was a winning game plan.

“It’s definitely a blueprint.

“It’s good to get the win but we want to get two in a row. That’s going to be our next challenge.”

Folau wore a particularly large grin before he even touched down for his second try just before halftime, admitting that the pass from lock Rob Simmons wasn’t intended for him.

“I was real surprised when it came straight to me but that gap opened up and I made the most of it.”
