Farr-Jones questions Wallabies belief

Former World Cup-winning Wallabies halfback Nick Farr-Jones has questioned whether Australia have the belief to end their drought against the All Blacks in Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup dead rubber in Brisbane.

Farr-Jones believed Australia could set themselves up for a successful 2019 World Cup by inflicting their first win over New Zealand in more than two years this weekend.

The All Blacks have held the Bledisloe Cup since 2003.

However, Farr-Jones was not sure if Australia had the mental toughness to get the job done.

“My reservation is: ‘do they have the belief and confidence?'” he said.

“Only until you eyeball a player and see they believe in that, I don’t know.

“And against the All Blacks you have to have that belief.”

Farr-Jones still held hope Australia could launch a World Cup title tilt with an upset win – just like his Wallabies did way back in 1990 in Wellington.

It snapped the All Blacks’ 23-game unbeaten run and first loss since 1986.

History shows Australia went on to claim the 1991 World Cup trophy.

“I look at Wellington, 1990 where we got over the line after a lean period against a great team,” Farr-Jones said.

“All of a sudden we found confidence that we can beat these guys.

“From that victory in Wellington through the early 1990s and my last years in the side we knew we could beat them on any day.

“That confidence is the critical thing.”
