Ex-NRL star Te’o set for England RU debut

Former NRL premiership winner Ben Te’o is set for his international rugby debut after being named on England’s bench for the autumn opener against South Africa at Twickenham.

The Worcester player has been called up as a replacement back after a spate of injuries to Eddie Jones’ team.

Jones has made six changes to the starting XV that toppled Australia 44-40 in Sydney in June, a win that sealed a 3-0 whitewash of the series against the Wallabies.

Outside centre Te’o, who joined English rugby in late 2014 soon after playing in South Sydney’s NRL grand final win, could also be set to face the Wallabies next month should he impress Jones in his new colours.

Te’o, who also played for the Wests Tigers and Brisbane in the NRL, is one of three potential debutants on the England bench for the Springboks clash.

Elliot Daly will make his run-on debut at outside centre ahead of the New Zealand-born 29-year-old, who played seven Origin matches for Queensland, and incumbent Jonathan Joseph.

“We’ve picked a match-day 23 with a blend of experience and youth,” Jones said.

“South African rugby has traditionally been about momentum – big ball carriers getting over the gain line, and nothing’s changed.”
