Douglas seeks big finish with Waratahs

Departing lock Kane Douglas says he owes the Waratahs a lot and hasn’t ruled out returning to the NSW fold after his stint with Irish rugby power Leinster.

The hard working second rower has logged 71 Super appearances since his debut in 2010.

The decision to head overseas has effectively stalled his Test career at 14 caps.

Fellow Waratah Will Skelton was among the young locks to capitalise, making an auspicious Test debut in the final game of the three-match series against France in Sydney last weekend.

With NSW leading the Australian Super conference and occupying second spot on the overall ladder, Douglas is hoping for a successful send-off before heading to Ireland.

“It would be good to finish this year with a bang, it would be awesome,” Douglas told AAP.

“The Waratahs have been very good to me as well and I think I owe a lot back.”

Unlike many contemporaries who head overseas near the end of their playing days, 25-year-old Douglas has opted to make the move in the prime of his career.

“Just to do something different and go see the world and do it while I’m a bit younger,” said Douglas, who started all three of the Wallabies 2013 Tests against the British and Irish Lions.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for me to play in a different competition and I can tick those things off the list.

“You never know, one day I might be back and it would be good to wear the Waratahs colours again.”

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika formerly coached Leinster, but Douglas said he hadn’t yet spoken to him about what to expect there.

“I’ve been to Dublin before and I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been over there before,” Douglas said.

“They say it’s a pretty good place, so I’m sure I’ll talk to ‘Cheik’ about it.”

Benn Robinson will on Saturday join fellow prop Al Baxter as the second most capped Waratah on 130 appearances, six behind flanker and former captain Phil Waugh.

Out of the Wallabies squad at present, the 29-year-old forward stressed he still had the desire to add to his tally of 66 caps.

He viewed Saturday’s clash with a Brumbies side boasting Test props Ben Alexander and Scott Sio as a chance to push his claims.

“I definitely still have plenty of passion and plenty of drive to go out and play Test footy,” Robinson said.

“I think it starts this week with a big game against the Brumbies, so I need to put in a good performance there and keep continually improving my game.”
