Douglas boys have injuries licked

NSW Waratahs second rower Kane Douglas is proving to be just as much of an ironman as his record-breaking rugby league brother.

Forward Luke Douglas will play his 195th straight match when the Titans start their NRL campaign against Cronulla on Monday, surpassing the competition record set by Jason Taylor between 1992 and 2000.

Meanwhile, Wallabies forward Kane has never missed a Super Rugby game through injury since breaking into the Waratahs side for the opening round of the 2010 competition.

He has reeled off 60 straight games, with his only absences due to a two-game suspension, being dropped in 2011 and going on international duty in 2013.

He missed matches last year with a knee problem, but that was on the Wallabies’ Spring tour.

“I don’t know if there’s something in our genes or something, or what’s going on,” Kane joked.

“My brother has got 195 this weekend. It’s a great record – it’s his ninth season.

“I look up to him. He’s my big brother and I’ll be going down to watch him on Monday night.”

Luke credited their late mother Trish for seeking information on how to treat niggles, while the siblings’ work ethic and attention to detail are also important.

“I suppose it must be a little bit of a luck thing in there, but you just try and do as much as you can,” said Kane, who has played 14 Tests.

“Luke has had a few weeks where they thought he was going to be out and he ended up being right.

“Just looking after yourself, I try and do that.

“If you have any little bumps and bruises, you don’t go and have a beer. You get it right and see a physio and ice it up.’

Douglas is confident the Waratahs will fix the deficiencies in their lineout after losing several throws in their last match against Queensland.

He said he has been trying to work on his attacking game more and is looking for more carries.
