Cronk would thrive in rugby, says Cheika

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika is convinced Cooper Cronk could make it in rugby and is all for the NSW Waratahs making a play for rugby league’s dual Dally M Medallist.

The superstar halfback will leave the Melbourne Storm at season’s end after pledging his future to his Sydney-based fiance – but is yet to find an NRL club that either wants him and can also afford him.

The 33-year-old says he’s also happy to retire at the end of 2017, especially if the table-topping Storm win the premiership, Queensland claim a 10th State of Origin series in 11 years and the Kangaroos win the World Cup.

But the Waratahs are said to be interested in luring Cronk to Moore Park, where he could join former Storm, Maroons and Kangaroos teammate Israel Folau and his one-time Melbourne understudy Mack Mason.

Cheika, who coached the Waratahs to their only Super Rugby title in 2014 before taking up his Wallabies post, said Cronk would be a great addition to rugby.

“He’s an Aussie, an Australian player who’s ultra-qualified in rugby league and he came through the ranks playing league after playing rugby back in school days,” the Wallabies coach said.

“If the Tahs are interested and he’s an Australian guy who wants to come and play there, I say good on ’em, get into it.

“Are the Australian Rugby Union going to get involved in it? No, that’s a deal between those guys to work out.

“But it’d be interested to see him back playing and I’d have no doubt whatsoever that he’d make a success of it because he’s that type of player.”

The influential mentor was responsible for luring Folau to the 15-man code in 2013, but said he’d not discussed any such move with Cronk.

“No, I don’t know him at all,” Cheika said when asked by AAP if he’d approached Cronk about a code switch.

“I’ve met him maybe once or twice just to say hello, so I don’t know him at all.”
