Cooper scratched, Lance in for Wallabies

Jono Lance is line for a shock Wallabies debut as a last-minute addition to the match-day squad against France, with starting No.10 Quade Cooper failing a late fitness test on his injured ankle.

Cooper will miss Saturday’s Stade de France clash having initially hurt his ankle at training on Tuesday.

In his place, regular No.10 Bernard Foley comes in alongside halfback Will Genia to give Australia it’s first-choice starting halves for the Spring Tour Test.

The reshuffle could also lead to the debut of playmaker Lance, who fills Foley’s spot on the bench.

It would be a remarkable turnaround for Lance, who was not part of coach Michael Cheika’s initial 32-man squad and would become Australia’s 14th debutant of the season should he take the field.

Should that happen, it would equal the Wallabies highest tally of debutants in the professional era – with starting inside centre Kyle Godwin to also make his debut on Saturday.

26-year-old Lance was flown to Europe this week in order to play the French Barbarians in a developmental Australian side and trained in place of Cooper during the week.

Cheika had been eager to give star playmaker Foley a break this week, following a heavy schedule which has involved playing in all 12 Tests this season, a full Super Rugby season and a stint in Japan following last year’s World Cup campaign.

The Wallabies are undefeated on the Spring Tour, following victories over Scotland and Wales, but made sweeping changes for the clash against France with Cheika opting to rest his weary stars ahead of crucial grand slam fixtures against England and Ireland.
