Bulls winger Basson suffers torn intestine

Bulls winger Bjorn Basson is being treated in a New Zealand hospital after suffering a torn intestine during Saturday’s Super Rugby playoff loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

He left the field during the first half of the match won 28-13 by the home side and later underwent surgery at Christchurch Hospital.

Bulls chief executive Barend van Graan said the 25-year-old Basson, who has played six times for the Springboks, would have to remain in New Zealand for at least five days before being able to return home.

“Team doctor Org Strauss stayed behind to look after Bjorn when the rest of the squad departed for home via Sydney. We have informed his wife of his injury which will keep him off the field for at least six weeks,” said Van Graan said.
