Brumbies primed for attack against ‘Tahs

The Brumbies have battled – and conquered – a post-South Africa hangover and now they say they can do the same against arch-rivals NSW in Saturday’s blockbuster Super Rugby derby. Skipper Ben Mowen on Friday backed the Brumbies’ recent form and particularly their attacking game, which has delivered 16 tries in the past three weeks – including 11 on foreign soil against the Bulls and the Lions. It’s produced a quiet confidence in Jake White’s squad that they can post a victory over their old foes for the first time since 2009. “It’s always challenging coming back from South Africa and we had a tough start to the week in terms of on-field performance,” Mowen told a Brumbies’ corporate luncheon on the eve of the game. “It wasn’t where we needed to be … but in saying that the last couple of days have been outstanding. “We scored 11 tries in South Africa which is extremely hard to do against quality opposition over there. “I’m not predicting the scoreboard against the `Tahs, but I like what we’re taking into the game.” It’s been touted as a do-or-die clash for the Waratahs, and a make-or-break game for the Brumbies, although both teams were trying to play down the significance of a win ahead of the match at Canberra Stadium. Victory would allow the Brumbies to push further ahead at the top of the Australian conference, which they currently lead by five points over the Waratahs and six points over the Reds. But if NSW can claim their fourth straight win over the ACT franchise, it would go a long way to boosting their odds of stealing the leader’s crown – and the all-important opportunity of contesting playoffs. Adding to the spectre, it will be the first time Mowen competes against his old NSW teammates, and the same for former Brumby Adam Ashley-Cooper. The clash also boasts some classic match-ups – at No.8 where a battle of the 120kg forwards will take place between the Brumbies’ Fotu Auelua and Waratah Wycliff Palu, while Wallabies selectors will be sure to watch the performances of playmakers Christian Lealiifano and Berrick Barnes. Acting Waratahs captain Benn Robinson rated the Brumbies’ performances over recent weeks. “They’ve got plenty of good leaders there, Stephen Moore up front, Benny Mowen leading the side and I think those two players are key to them doing well,” he said. “They’ve got plenty of experience with Ben Alexander up front as well and in the backline some new, young players and I think that combination of youthful players and some of the experience makes for a good side.”
