Blitzboks to face Fiji in NZ sevens final

It’s Olympic champions Fiji against world series leaders South Africa in an almost-inevitable final of the Wellington Sevens.

The teams who have dominated the sport for the past two years have appeared a class above their rivals this weekend and will contest the decider later on Sunday.

The teams have already met in pool play, with the Blitzboks winning 31-12.

South Africa are the only unbeaten side and their three comfortable wins on Saturday’s opening day have been followed by straightforward knockout victories over France (45-0) and Canada (21-5).

In the process, winger Seabelo Senatla took his tournament try-scoring tally to seven. His 179 career tries leave him level with retired Fabian Juries as South Africa’s most-prolific try-scorer.

The Blitzboks have scored 158 points and conceded just 17, playing with a precision that other teams have failed to match.

Fiji ended the hopes of three-time defending champions New Zealand with a clinical 26-10 win, before squeezing out two late tries to overcome a plucky Scotland 19-12 in the semi-finals.

The All Blacks Sevens created plenty of chances against Fiji but were guilty of errors in attacking positions.

Winger Joeli Lutumailagi set the tone for Fiji, twice shrugging off opposite Sione Molia to score long-range tries.

All Blacks Sevens coach Scott Waldrom lamented the lack of support as his team failed to reach the semi-finals for the sixth time in their past seven tournaments.

The event’s popularity has declined considerably, to the point where its future in Wellington could come under question.

“It didn’t feel like a home-town support – there were definitely more Fijians,” Waldrom said.

The final of the Challenge Trophy, for the bottom half of the field, will be between Australia and Kenya.

The Australians – who were unfortunate to draw South Africa and Fiji in pool play – beat Samoa 17-14 and Wales 24-10 on Sunday.
