Australia qualify for Sevens World Cup

Australia qualified for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens with a 12-7 win over Samoa in the final of the Oceania Championships in Sydney on Sunday.

A long-range try to Allan Faalavaau put the hosts in front after they went to halftime trailing 7-5 and a desperate try-saving tackle from Will Miller in the last play of the game sealed the victory at North Sydney Oval.

Australia advanced to the decider with a 24-7 triumph over Tonga in the semi-finals after thrashing Tahiti 55-0 in the quarter-finals.

With Samoa already qualified for the World Cup in Russia next year, Tonga claimed the second qualifying spot with a 19-17 win over Cook Islands in the third-place playoff.

Sevens powerhouses Fiji and New Zealand didn’t compete having already booked their places at the tournament – along with Wales, Argentina, England, Kenya and South Africa – to be play in Moscow in June.

Australia now turn their focus to the opening round of the Sevens World Series which kicks off on the Gold Coast on October 13.
