Australia’s new faces shone as they eliminated a shellshocked Fiji from the world series sevens rugby tournament at Wellington.
A quarter-final place is guaranteed for Australia following their 21-12 upset of the Pacific Island sevens giants, who also lost their opening match on Friday against Scotland.
Australia, who eased past Portugal 24-5 in their first pool D match, led the Fijians 14-5 at halftime and ultimately outscored them three tries to two.
Fiji crossed early through Joji Baleviani Raqamate before Australia scored the next three tries through Sean McMahon, Ben Adams and Tom Cusak, all converted by Lewis Holland.
While McMahon is a prolific tryscorer at this level, burly Brisbane electrician Adams and Canberra teenager Cusak are both playing in their first tournament.
Ulaiyasi Lawavou scored for Fiji with three minutes remaining but their high error count continued until the final whistle.
Australia’s final pool game against unbeaten Scotland will dictate both teams’ playoff schedule on Saturday.
