Aussie women into Sydney 7s semis

Australia will play Russia in the Sydney 7s semi-finals after Emma Tonegato provided the razzle dazzle in a 29-0 domination of Spain on Saturday morning.

The hosts had beaten Spain by the same 29-0 scoreline in Friday’s pool game and neatly mirrored that in the crucial final against the lucky losers, who earned a finals spot as the second-best side not to automatically qualify.

The match was played almost exclusively in the Spanish half, aside from a late raid on the Australian line to close the first half, with Australia still yet to concede a point in four games.

Charlotte Caslick continued her brilliant tournament when she slid through a gap to score Australia’s first on the minute mark.

Emilee Cherry then propped, stepped and accelerated down the left wing to outsmart the Spanish defence and score Australia’s second.

That pair then combined for Australia’s third, Cherry’s long ball hitting Caslick on the chest and putting her through a hole for a 17-0 halftime lead.

Co-captain Sharni Williams’ try then continued the rout in the second half, but it was Emma Tonegato that had tongues wagging post-game.

The 22-year-old scooped up a pinpoint grubber and toyed with her Spanish sweeper, turning her inside out five times on the way to the line for the game’s final try.

“It was awesome; incredible footwork from Emma,” teammate Evania Pelite said.

“We do call her ‘the Cobra’, so to see that in action was really good … she does school us (for the same thing) out at training.”

Australia will play Russia in the semi-final later on Saturday, after the Europeans prevailed 19-14 in their quarter-final against USA.

Australia, who won the World Series opener in Dubai, will start as heavy favourites against the improving Russian outfit.

“It’s feeling exactly like Dubai, so hopefully we can go all the way,” Pelite said.

“We have some good combinations out there, obviously Cherry was rested a bit yesterday so it’s great to have her back out on the field again.”
