Aussie men pip Scotland to top pool

Australia have won a thriller against Scotland 24-21 to set up a mouth-watering Sydney 7s quarter-final against New Zealand on Sunday.

The nail-biting victory made it three from three for Australia at Allianz Stadium after earlier wins against Canada (27-5) and USA (26-19).

Just like in those games, Australia didn’t have it their own way, with Scotland scoring twice in the second half to take a late 21-17 lead.

Australia stayed calm though, working their way forward and regaining a 24-21 lead through Tom Lucas, who had come into the 12 for the injured Boyd Killingworth (hamstring).

Tom Connor was sin-binned upon the restart for taking the man in the air as Scotland chased an overtime match-winner.

But a double knock on was enough reason for the referee to blow time and continue Australia’s unbeaten tournament.

Earlier, New Zealand looked to have sealed top spot in their pool when they lead Fiji 17-14 with 10 seconds on the clock in their final pool game.

But the Kiwis opted to kick across field in search of a try, gifting the Olympic champions possession and a chance to steal it.

They didn’t need to be asked twice, taking the ball 90m to score the match-winner and delight the huge Fijian contingent at Allianz Stadium.

Killingworth was a late withdrawal after a hamstring injury in the win against Canada but is hopeful of being fit for Sunday’s finals.
