Anscombe out of Super Rugby for six weeks

Super Rugby’s leading point scorer Gareth Anscombe has been ruled out of the Chiefs’ season for six weeks after breaking a bone in his foot.

Anscombe fractured a bone near the big toe of his right foot at Chiefs training on Thursday and a scan showed we won’t play until at least the competition’s resumption after the June international break.

That hiatus and two bye weeks mean Anscombe might only miss three games, including Friday’s match against the Western Force in Pukekohe.

The 21-year-old has been a revelation for the defending champions after the Blues decided against renewing his contract this year.

Normally a five-eighth, he has shone at fullback, highlighted by three tries in last weekend’s defeat of the Melbourne Rebels.

He has landed 55 of 69 shots at goal and his 163 points is 31 more than the next best player – Bulls No.10 Morne Steyn.

Anscombe is replaced for the Force match by All Blacks five-eighth Aaron Cruden, who had been selected on the reserve bench to give him a partial rest. Midfield back Charlie Ngatai is promoted onto the bench.

The injury came at the wrong time for Anscombe who was keen to prove himself in his preferred five-eighth role.

“It would have been a good opportunity to play 10 so I am pretty gutted,” he said.
