All Blacks thrash Italy in Rome

The All Blacks have bounced back from last week’s loss to Ireland in style, blitzing Italy 68-10 in Rome.

Fielding a much-changed line-up from that which fell to the Irish in Chicago, the world champions were far too strong for Italy, bagging 10 tries to one in the rout.

Italy provided little resistance to the All Black onslaught with playmakers Carlo Canna and Giorgio Bronzini struggling at the scrum-base.

Vowing to attack the All Blacks’ set-pieces all week, the Italians also failed to assert themselves at the lineout and made just one steal from inexperienced rake Codie Taylor.

Midfielder Malakai Fekitoa opened the scoring in the fourth minute after getting on the end of an offensive scrum play, before Italy hit back with a penalty goal.

From their it was all New Zealand, all the time.

Scott Barrett played in tighthead Charlie Faumuina, who barged over in the 12th minute.

The All Blacks made almost 200 metres and 50 carries more than Italy in the first half while conceding fewer line breaks as they went to the break with a 35-3 lead.

Tries came to lock Patrick Tuipulotu, who grabbed the side’s third when the Kiwis made good yardage with a driving maul, then the All Blacks pushed further ahead in the 25th minute when Anton Lienert-Brown threw a trademark offload into the path of winger Israel Dagg.

Veteran loosehead Wyatt Crockett knocked on within metres of the line in the 34th minute, but made amends three minutes later by squeezing under the posts.

New Zealand pushed on in the second half and scored within four minutes of the restart.

Cruden feathered a cross-field chip-kick into the path of Taylor, before the ball made its way to loosie Steven Luatua via Elliot Dixon to score.

Italian heads were dropping as the All Blacks streaked further and further ahead, and Fekitoa and Dixon bagged tries in quick succession following breakaways.

Gli Azzurri gave their fans something to cheer with their own breakaway through Tommaso Boni in the 67th minute, but All Blacks debutant Rieko Ioane shut those cheers down when he scored five minutes later.

Winger Waisake Naholo then settled the 68-10 result with three minutes remaining, collecting a clever Lienert-Brown inside ball to walk over and cap a resounding win.
