Captain Kieran Read is dismissing any suggestion a change of referee will help the All Blacks clean up their messy breakdown work against Wales.

South African Jaco Peyper will control Saturday’s second Test in Wellington, replacing Englishman Wayne Barnes, who confused the hosts in the first clash in Auckland.

New Zealand emerged 39-21 winners but later sought clarity with Barnes over several breakdown interpretations.

The All Blacks have a chequered history with Barnes, having lost four of the 10 Tests he has controlled.

They have a perfect five-from-five record under Peyper but Read says the change of official means nothing.

He says winning the all-important collisions comes down to inner fortitude, something which was missing at Eden Park for lengthy periods.

“We’re going to turn up with plenty of intensity this week – that’s all we have to do,” Read said.

“We can’t wait for things to happen; we have to do it ourselves.

“It’s probably just a little bit of urgency and we need to put a few more numbers in.”

The other area Read has hammered his troops on is simple heart in defence.

It wasn’t where it should have been a week ago, prompting the new skipper to urge greater effort when the lungs were bursting.

“That’s just working hard for your mate, really.

“You are blowing hard but it’s that toughness – you have to work extra hard when it’s needed.”

Both teams reported no fitness concerns on Friday after completing their preparations.
