Aki returns for Chiefs after Kahui injury

Richard Kahui’s latest shoulder injury means rookie midfielder Bundee Aki returns to the Chiefs starting line-up for their Super Rugby clash with the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday.

Kahui suffered damage during an innocuous training activity in Hamilton on Tuesday, leaving the field in obvious pain.

The 16-Test All Blacks centre has undergone four shoulder reconstructions over the past six years, the most recent late last year which curtailed his start to this season.

Brendon Leonard starts at halfback with Augustine Pulu moving to the bench, while the back trio of Tim Nanai-Williams, Lelia Masaga and Gareth Anscombe remains unchanged.

Another shoulder injury has forced a change in the front row, with Michael Kainga ruled out, leaving Pauliasi Manu and Ben Tameifuna to start as front row props.

Openside flanker Sam Cane makes the starting line-up, with Matt Vant Leven having his first start this season at No.8.

Hooker Hika Elliot comes onto the bench and is joined by prop Toby Smith, flanker Tanerau Latimer and winger Patrick Osborne.

Chiefs: Gareth Anscombe, Lelia Masaga, Tim Nanai-Williams, Bundee Aki, Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Aaron Cruden, Brendon Leonard, Matt Vant Leven, Sam Cane, Liam Messam, Brodie Retallick, Craig Clarke, Ben Tameifuna, Mahonri Schwalger, Pauliasi Manu. Reserves: Hika Elliot, Toby Smith, Michael Fitzgerald, Tanerau Latimer, Augustine Pulu, Robbie Robinson, Patrick Osborne.
