Rest day at Quiksilver Pro surfing

Officials have called a lay day for the world championship surfing event on the Gold Coast, with forecasts that conditions won’t improve much until the weekend.

Joel Parkinson led the Australian charge on Tuesday, scoring the competition’s first perfect 10 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Quiksilver Pro with countrymen Josh Kerr, Owen Wright, Taj Burrow and Adrian Buchan.

In the women’s competition Tyler Wright, Laura Enever, Sally Fitzgibbons and local favourite Stephanie Gilmore have made the semi-finals an all-Aussie battle.

A decision will be made on Thursday morning whether to put the competition on hold for another day.
