Four Australian women in WSL quarters

Tyler Wright will meet American Lakey Peterson in the first Roxy Pro quarter-final as World Surf League organisers push ahead with the women’s event on the Gold Coast.

The two-time defending world champion will be the first of four Australians in action, having already progressed in a tight third round heat earlier in the day.

Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Keely Andrew also progressed, with Gilmore and Andrew preparing for their third surf of the day after winning knock-out second round heats on Monday morning.

Fitzgibbons will surf against emerging American 16-year-old Caroline Marks, who beat Gilmore to top spot in their third round battle.

Gilmore will meet Andrew after the latter produced a great ride on the buzzer of her third round heat to steal the win from Fitzgibbons.

Last place in the three-person third round heats was knocked out in a new-look women’s format.

It mean’s men’s second round battles featuring Australians Matt Wilkinson, Wade Carmichael, Joel Parkinson and Mikey Wright, John John Florence and 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina won’t be surfed until at least Tuesday.
