Aussies dominate at Snapper Rocks

Local hero Joel Parkinson has scored the competition’s first perfect 10 to reach the quarter-final of the men’s world surfing championship event on the Gold Coast.

The women’s event saw the elimination of the world and defending Roxy Pro champion Carissa Moore, as all four semi-final places were filled by Australians.

After being beaten in a non-elimination round early on Tuesday a steely-eyed Parkinson came out firing.

Not even the pain of a bluebottle sting could distract him as he grabbed the 10-point wave with five minutes remaining to leave fellow Queenslander Julian Wilson with no hope of catching up.

Parkinson said his memory of the ride was a bit patchy.

“I couldn’t remember exactly how many turns I did and I heard the commentator say what score do you want to give it and I was like – `I’ll give it a 10′,” he said.

“I feel nice and relaxed and on that last wave I felt like some aggression finally came out and that’s what I wanted to feel.”

Parkinson comes up against Jordy Smith in the quarter-final in what could be a lively meeting – in their last meeting at Snapper Rocks in 2011 the South African eliminated Parkinson from the event in round five.

“That’s what makes for healthy competition, they’re the ones you live for and you’re happy to get involved in a real rivalry,” Parkinson said.

The other quarter-final heats pit Gold Coaster Josh Kerr against the red hot Kelly Slater, Owen Wright against Brazil’s Adriano De Souza and Taj Burrow against fellow Australian Adrian Buchan.

In the upset of the day Tyler Wright pulled off a stunning coup, eliminating Moore, with Laura Enever, world No.2 Sally Fitzgibbons and local favourite Stephanie Gilmore all winning their heats to make the semi-finals an all-Australian contest.

Moore’s elimination also means she loses her world No.1 ranking.

Fitzgibbons will meet Gilmore in the semi-finals and while the latter may enjoy most of the support, Fitzgibbons said she couldn’t complain about the crowds thus far.

“All the `Go Sally’ stuff is insane … they’ve got tunnels and banners on the beach and I’m using that positive energy and trying to put it out there on the waves.”

With conditions deteriorating a decision will be made early on Wednesday morning whether to put both events on hold, with competition unlikely to resume before the weekend.
