Record-breaker Vonn wins World Cup super-G

Lindsey Vonn won the women’s alpine skiing World Cup super-G Bankso, Bulgaria on Sunday, the US star registering a record-breaking 18th success in the discipline.

The 27-year-old 2010 Olympic downhill champion claimed her 51st World Cup win and the tenth of the season on the Marc Girardelli slope in a time of 1min 15.66sec.

Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein came in second at 0.5s with Italy’s Daniela Merighetti finishing third at 0.7s.

The joint-favourite for Sunday’s event, German Maria Holf-Riesch, came in sixth.

Vonn leads the super-G standings with a 94 point margin over Austria’s Anna Fenninger with the season-climax approaching next month in Schladming.

Vonn is already assured of lifting her fifth successive downhill title and the super-combined globe and is looking good to win the overall title too with a lead of 500 points over Slovenia’s Tina Maze.

The super-G went ahead after Saturday’s scheduled downhill had to be cancelled due to strong winds.
