France’s Worley wins Soldeu giant slalom

France’s Tessa Worley won the women’s World Cup giant slalom on Sunday, her second straight win in the discipline and seventh victory on the international ski circuit.

The 22-year-old Worley, born to a French mother and Australian father and partly raised in New Zealand, clocked a combined time of 2min 01.80sec over the two runs, having built up a valuable lead on her main rivals with a fine leading first run.

Worley finished 0.16sec ahead of Slovenia’s Tina Maze, with German Maria Hoefl-Riesch at 0.75sec.

“It’s a fantastic day,” beamed Worley.

“I knew it was a great piste for me and I’m happy to have produced the goods.

“After the first run, I took the time to savour the fact I was in the lead. That position is not always evident.

“It’s why I wanted to ski the second run as if I had to go looking for victory, to not give away time to anybody.”

Maze said she was not trying not to focus on accumulating points in the overall World Cup standings, in which she currently stands second on 972 points behind American Lindsey Vonn (1,382), who was eighth here.

“You must always keep hope but I’m trying not to think about the points I’m scoring for the overall ranking, just to have fun while racing,” Maze said.

“I’ll always try to keep the pressure up on Lindsey Vonn, but 400 points is a lot.”
