While the general rule is to back the host nation athlete, I just can’t turn down the value on Kaihua in this race.
Japanese walker Toshikazu Yamanishi is the $2.10 favourite at the time of writing but this is shaping up as a much more open race than the market would suggest.
China’s Kaihua posted an impressive PB earlier this year of 1:16.54, the third fastest time in history and almost 30 seconds faster than what our favourite has recorded.
Conditions should be conducive to a speedy run with this event being moved north to Sapporo and I love the value on offer here.
