Triathlete Densham faces new hurdle

Triathlete Erin Densham’s turbulent four years since the Beijing Olympics has taken another dramatic twist, with partner Jonathan Hall resigning from Triathlon Australia.

Hall was also coaching Densham, who is currently an outsider to gain her second-straight Olympic selection.

It is understood that Hall this week will announce a new overseas coaching role.

“I think they (Triathlon Australia) have lost a very valuable person to the program and it’s their loss,” Densham said.

But Densham is also confident she can make the most of her changed circumstances.

“I think the change will be good and obviously he will play a bigger partner role, as opposed to the partner-coach relationship.”

Densham finished fourth in Sunday’s Australian Sprint Championship after digging herself out of a big mental hole.

Told she looked dispirited after a bad swim, Densham said: “I was – it (the swim) probably got the better of me.

“Again, I learnt from that.”

She rebounded with the fastest run split of the women’s race to miss the podium by only six seconds, providing a glimpse of her largely-untapped talent.

“If they picked the Olympic team tomorrow, I wouldn’t be in it – I know that,” she said.

“I’m fine with that, I have to prove myself … I’m quite willing to do that.”

Densham has had rotten luck in the past four years – glandular fever, a heart condition and a hamstring injury meant continual setbacks.

Last year she had a “hot spot” in her leg that nearly became a stress fracture.

With Hall about to head overseas, Densham will board with Bill Davoren, the former Triathlon Australia national performance director who now works at the Western Bulldogs in the AFL.

Davoren had a massive impact on Densham’s early career before she made the Beijing Olympics team.

“Obviously we lost touch there for a few years and he left the sport … I just needed to rekindle that.

“I needed him there, he’s like a rock.”
