Dutch court rules in Olympic dispute

A Dutch judge has ruled that the country’s gymnastics union moved too quickly in picking Epke Zonderland for the London Olympics ahead of national teammate Jeffrey Wammes.

Both athletes have met the Olympic qualifying criteria, but the gymnastics union gave Zonderland the only Dutch ticket for the games after he beat Wammes in a test event in London in January.

Zonderland is a two-time world championships silver medallist on the high bar.

But Wammes went to court to fight the selection, insisting he should have earned the spot based on his form.

A judge in the eastern city of Zutphen ruled on Tuesday the gymnastics union can only select Zonderland if he proves his form at upcoming competitions.
