The case for Minnesota: The Vikings are playing their best football of the season, losing only once in their last 4 games and covering in 4 of their last 5, and this week they’re a healthy 7-point underdog against a Baltimore team that struggles to score. The Ravens rank 29th in total offense and they’ve produced 20 points or fewer in 8 of their 12 games, so the Minnesota defense, which is coming off their best game of the season in a win over Chicago last week, should have success on Sunday. Baltimore’s offensive problems have resulted in an abundance of close games; they’ve only won 2 games this year by more than 8 points and they haven’t covered a number bigger than 4, so the 7-point line in this game feels a bit excessive. After all, the Vikings finally have their best player, running back Adrian Peterson, producing at an elite level. Peterson has rushed for 357 combined yards in his last 2 games, proving again that he tends to get better over the course of the season. Between Peterson’s return to form and Baltimore’s problems on offense, Minnesota +7 looks like a smart bet.
The case for Baltimore: A loss to Minnesota is almost unfathomable for Baltimore right now; the Ravens desperately need the game to maintain their position in the AFC playoff race, they’re 5-1 (also 5-1 ATS) at home this season, and the Vikings have won only 3 times all year and have yet to win on the road. Minnesota has an awful defense that ranks 32nd (a.k.a. dead last) in points allowed, so the Baltimore offense, which has scored 20 or more in 3 of their last 4, should be able to build on their recent success. Defensively the Ravens don’t have any issues, as they currently rank 7th in points allowed and have held their last 11 opponents to 24 points or fewer. They should feast on the one-dimensional Vikings offense, especially since Adrian Peterson may be limited by a groin injury. Minnesota’s 2nd-best offensive player, tight end Kyle Rudolph, has already been ruled out with an injured foot, so the Vikes appear to be in serious trouble against the fierce Baltimore D. This one feels like a blowout waiting to happen.
