Preview:

The week 16 match-up between the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers pegged as pre-season was one of the crucial battles in the tail end of the regular season. Unfortunately, this Monday Night Football game was only important to one team as the Falcons were mired in a very disappointing year.

The Falcons (4-10) were not only struggling but they were the worst teams in the NFL going into the final week of play. Although they have won two of their last three games, they’ve done enough damage to themselves early in the year suffering a 5-game losing streak from week 8 to 12 to virtually put them out of contention.

The Falcons were tied for the league’s best record of 13-3 in the 2012 regular season marking this year as one of the worst turnarounds in the recent NFL history. Atlanta will miss the post-season for the first time since 2009.

Meanwhile, the 49ers haven’t been as good as last year but are still in very good position to return to the playoffs. With 10 wins against 4 losses, they can move a game ahead of the New Orleans Saints (10-5) and the Arizona Cardinals (10-5) for the AFC wildcard slots.

Depending on their defense again, they are 4th containing the opponents’ passing (199.7 yards) and 5th in rushing (99.4), the 49ers have won four straight in a row to keep the wildcard hopes alive. Their offense on the ground have also been good—they rank in fifth in the NFL in rushing yards (137.1 per game) and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (16 per game).
