Canterbury winger Jonathan Wright admits there was something extra special about scoring twice against former club Parramatta on Friday and is hopeful his strong form this season can earn him a new deal with the NRL’s in-form team.
Wright, who can also play centre, left the Eels after the 2010 season, frustrated by a lack of opportunities that netted just 12 games in two seasons.
Two of those appearances came during Parramatta’s remarkable run to the grand final in 2009 with Wright scoring tries in the semi-final wins over St George Illawarra and Gold Coast.
Despite those strong performances, he was left out of the team for the preliminary final win against the Bulldogs and the grand final loss to Melbourne with then coach Daniel Anderson preferring Krisnan Inu to the former Newcastle junior.
Ironically, Wright now plays alongside Inu at Belmore, and is flourishing under the coaching of Des Hasler, scoring nine tries this year and being an ever-present member of the side.
“It was nice to score against the Eels, with them being my old club,” Wright told AAP after helping his side to a 32-12 win at ANZ Stadium.
“I enjoyed my time there, and still have friends at the club and I have no bad feelings towards Parramatta.
“I scored one against them earlier in the year as well so I’ve been quite lucky when we’ve played them.”
Wright’s current contract expires at the end of this season and he’s hopeful his manager David Riolo and the club can come to an agreement to keep him at Belmore.
“I’ve really enjoyed this season,” he said.
“It’s the first time I’ve held down a regular spot in the NRL and working with Des has made me a much better player.
“I am feeling more confident and would really love to stay. This is a real family club and I am real happy here at the Doggies.
“I’ve got a missus and a little one on the way so hopefully I can get this behind me and not have to worry too much about the future.”
The Bulldogs have signed Sam Perrett and Inu already this year, and have also splashed out for Tony Williams to join the club from Manly in 2013.
However, Wright is confident he can remain part of Hasler’s future plans.
“We were really short on outside backs so the club had no choice but to try (and) sign guys like Kris and Sam,” he said.
“I’ve been happy with my form this year and I back my ability to stay in the team.”
