Wigan keen to keep star turn Bevan French

Wigan are plotting to keep Bevan French in England’s Super League after the mercurial Australian fullback almost single-handedly destroyed beaten Challenge Cup finalists Salford.

French scored three tries and set up two more to help the Warriors to a hugely impressive 58-12 victory at St Helens and show what Super League will be missing in 2021 if the 24-year-old returns to the NRL.

The former Parramatta star is widely expected to head back to Australia at the end of the campaign, but Warriors coach Adrian Lam has not given up hopes of keeping his man in England’s northwest.

“He’s been unbelievable for us and he’s only going to get better if we can keep him here next year,” Lam said.

“We’re doing our best to keep him.

“It’s well known that he’s getting a few bites from the NRL but it’s not a done deal and be reassured we’ve left no stone unturned. I talk to Bevan every day and that will continue.

“We’re working hard as a club to make sure he gets what he wants but at the end of the day it’s Bevan who has to make that decision.”
