What we learnt from NRL round one

WHAT WE LEARNT ABOUT YOUR NRL TEAM AFTER ROUND ONE:

* Cronulla – Forget the loss of Michael Ennis and Ben Barba being their biggest headache. If they can’t correct their horrible completion rate (20/32), they won’t make the eight.

* Brisbane – With all eyes on halves partner Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford gave a reminder that while he’s in the side, they’ll always be a potent force.

* Canterbury – There was little evidence they’d overhauled their stuttering attack as they managed just six points in their loss to Melbourne.

* Melbourne – With Kevin Proctor gone, Tohu Harris (foot) out and Jesse Bromwich suffering a dislocated thumb, the Storm forwards are set to be tested.

* South Sydney – Coach Michael Maguire has massive problems – star recruit Robbie Farah lacked impact, Greg Inglis (ACL) is probably gone for the season and Adam Reynolds (appendicitis) is still three weeks from returning.

* Wests Tigers – They need to re-sign James Tedesco. One try, 169m, two linebreaks, three linebreak assists, one try assist – his numbers in their win over Souths say it all.

* St George Illawarra – We were too hasty in writing off the Dragons. Panned for being too rigid last year, they seem to have thrown out their 2016 play book.

* Penrith – Bryce Cartwright needs to improve his defence fast after missing seven tackles in Saturday’s loss to the Dragons.

* North Queensland – Their forwards can still get the job done despite the loss of premiership props James Tamou and Ben Hannant.

* Canberra – If the Raiders don’t improve their discipline, they’ll never challenge for the title. They lost the penalty count 11-4 against the Cowboys.

* Gold Coast – Jarryd Hayne is still short of a gallop and even Neil Henry admits his star is only performing at 80 per cent capacity.

* Sydney Roosters – The Roosters are the real deal with two-try hero Luke Keary in the side. He and Mitchell Pearce looked like they had been playing together for years.

* Warriors – The Warriors still don’t have their heads right after relying on a late Ryan Hoffman try to save their blushes.

* Newcastle – It’s only a matter of time before their 19-game winning streak comes to an end. There was plenty to like about Sunday’s four-point loss to the Warriors.

* Manly – They need more out of Daly Cherry-Evans after he failed to make an impact on opening day at Lottoland.

* Parramatta – The Eels are a different side with Corey Norman in their line-up after he orchestrated Sunday’s win over the Sea Eagles.
