Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights Preview
Wests Tigers are under pressure to deliver this season after heavy spending and promises of a new era.
Despite their optimism, the Tigers remain three-time wooden spooners with notable gaps in their roster.
Their first chance to make an impact comes at Campbelltown against a Newcastle team, which has reached the finals in four of the last five years, despite a few setbacks.
New halfback Jarome Luai takes on the captaincy with Api Koroisau suspended. Tallyn Da Silva steps in at hooker, and Heath Mason takes over at fullback for the injured Jahream Bula. Several debutants, including Sunia Turuva and Royce Hunt, are set to feature.
However, the Tigers’ centres and middle forwards are still a concern in Benji Marshall’s squad.
Newcastle, after a late-season surge, made the 2024 finals but remains heavily reliant on star fullback Kalyn Ponga. The Knights have a solid pack and a strong centre combination with Bradman Best and Dane Gagai.
The Tigers have struggled against Newcastle, with six consecutive losses, including a 34-18 defeat in 2024.
Although the Tigers showed some improvement at Campbelltown, they’ve struggled with consistency, and the absence of key players like Koroisau and Bula leaves them vulnerable.
The more settled Knights are slight favourites for this encounter.
