Wests Tigers vs Canberra Raiders Preview

Wests Tigers had the bye to bask in their incredible 66-18 beatdown of North Queensland, but the break was arguably ill-timed with the resurgent outfit winning three of their last four.

The Tigers have shown an underrated defensive resolve for most of a trying 2023 campaign, but the blowout at Leichhardt was a massive attacking uptick – driven by Luke Brooks and young guns Jahream Bula and Starford To’a, while forward tyros Stefano Utaikamanu and Fonua Pole were superb.

Following Joe Ofahengaue’s exit to Parramatta, Pole comes into the starting pack at lock with Alex Seyfarth joining the bench in the only change to the Tigers’ Round 12 side.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has contentiously rested in-form veteran Jarrod Croker in order for his to play his 300th game at home next week.

Albert Hopoate moves to centre and Nick Cotric is promoted to the wing, while Origin debutant has been named to back up in the place of Corey Harawira-Naera.

The Raiders bounced back from an insipid, streak-ending 46-12 home loss to Manly by outlasting depleted Souths 33-26 in impressive style, holding their nerve down the stretch following Harawira-Naera’s harrowing exit, as Hopoate bagged a hat-trick on the wing but Corey Horsburgh stole the show.

The Raiders have won nine of their last 10 against the Tigers, including the last five straight.

Last season the Tigers were swamped 56-10 in the final round at Leichhardt Oval, John Bateman coming up against his old teammates adds a layer of intrigue to this one.

This is a definite banana-skin game for the Raiders, travelling to take on a Tigers side with their tails up.

The Tigers are on a six-match losing streak at Campbelltown, however this is a venue where the last four matches have produced 38 points or less so expect a tight Friday night grind.
