Warriors knocked out of Auckland Nines

A Shaun Johnson-less Warriors outfit have embarrassingly been bundled out on day one of the Auckland Nines for the first time in the tourament’s four-year history.

While the Warriors were a major disappointment on their home turf at Eden Park, five teams have already clinched quarter-final berths.

Gold Coast, Penrith, Parramatta, Manly and Brisbane progress to the sudden-death rounds after scoring two wins from as many games on Saturday.

Along with the Warriors, Canterbury, Cronulla, St George Illawarra and the Wests Tigers exit after coming up empty, and are likely to rest their NRL stars in day two dead rubbers.

Jarryd Hayne was a day one hero for the Titans, who belted NRL premiers the Sharks in the tournament opener before accounting for the Bulldogs.

Penrith’s new recruit James Tamou starred in a win over the Bulldogs, before the Panthers went on to claim a sudden-death berth by shocking the Sharks without a host of NRL stars.

Cowboys youngsters Gideon Gela-Mosby and Kalyn Ponga also lit up Eden Park with eye-catching efforts, the former bagging three tries in a win over the Sydney Roosters.

Brisbane, who thrashed the Storm in their first game, became the fifth team into the knockout stages with an impressive 21-8 win over Newcastle.

The Eels, who were stripped of last year’s nines title for salary cap breaches in the NRL, took a step towards a legitimate crown with big wins over the Dragons and Warriors.

Halves Corey Norman and Clint Gutherson were particularly impressive in both wins.

The Warriors crashed out after successive losses to the Sea Eagles and Eels.

Losing their first game 15-11 to Manly, the Warriors then wilted under pressure against a zippy Eels attack to concede three tries in a 17-0 defeat.

The early elimination was made worse by a groin strain to Johnson in the warm-up.

“He just had a tightness in his groin area. We decided not to take the risk with him,” assistant coach Steve McNamara said.
