Four Australian players from Super League side Warrington were on Wednesday included in a 19-man Exiles squad for next week’s International Origin clash with England at the Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Brett Hodgson, Trent Waterhouse and brothers Michael and Joel Monaghan were all called up by Exiles coach Brian McClennan, raising the prospect of some interesting clashes with England’s Warrington quartet of Chris Hill, Adrian Morley, Richie Myler and Ben Westwood.
McClennan has trimmed an initial group of 27 players and added Wigan’s Harrison Hansen, Steve Menzies of Catalan Dragons, Hull KR half-back Travis Burns and Leeds’ Brett Delaney to his squad.
“This is a very strong squad — you’ve only got to look at the names of some of the players I’ve had to leave out to see that,” said former New Zealand coach McClennan.
“We’ll be giving it our best shot and England will have to be at their very best to beat us. For players on either side it’s their only representative opportunity before the rugby league World Cup (which starts in October), so I expect a very intense battle.
“We’re aiming to put on a style of rugby that does the Exiles brand proud and I really hope the Warrington public come out and support the match in huge numbers.”
The International Origin match was created in 2011 as a means of giving the England national side a competitive fixture against a team composed of overseas players based in Britain.
Although it was played as a two-game series last year, it has reverted to a one-off format this season.
