Wane glad of Finch double against Widnes

Wigan coach Shaun Wane insists payback was delivered after ex-Sydney five-eighth Brett Finch scored a double in the Super League leaders’ 54-12 defeat of basement boys Widnes.

The Warriors welcomed Widnes to the DW Stadium hell-bent on gaining revenge for their 37-36 loss to the Super League new-boys back in March – and Finch helped them fulfil it.

The 30-year-old, who also enjoyed spells with Canberra, Parramatta and Melbourne in the NRL, scored two second-half tries as Wigan ran in 10 in total to punish the Vikings.

Josh Charnley was the biggest contributor with a hat-trick and seven goals, all in the first game since former New Zealand international Thomas Leuluai suffered a broken leg.

Wane was no more than satisfied by completing the revenge mission but knows the importance of the result with the likes of Leuluai’s absence in mind.

“We were desperate to win that one,” said Wane. “It wasn’t as convincing as I wanted it to be but Widnes have got some good players.

“It was a scratchy performance. We were not at our best but when you consider what we’ve been through the last few weeks, I’m fairly happy.

“We lost a couple of major members of our first-team squad and, having a week off, I knew we wouldn’t be at our absolute best.”

Meanwhile, Castleford coach Ian Millward outright refused to discuss the absence of former St George stand-off Rangi Chase from the Tigers’ 40-22 defeat by Leeds.

Chase, who is heavily linked with a move away from Castleford, was named in the initial 19-man squad for the clash against the Rhinos but wasn’t included at all.

And Millward wouldn’t be drawn on the reasons for Chase’s no-show – disciplinary or otherwise.

Elsewhere, Trent Robinson admitted the Catalan Dragons were indebted to Scott Dureau after his two late kicks sealed a 13-10 victory over Hull KR.

The 25-year-old half-back showed nerves of steel to slot a drop goal and a penalty after Clint Greenshields’ try six minutes from time helped pull Catalan level.
