Walters set for Qld Origin job

Kevin Walters is expected to be announced as the new coach of the champion Queensland State of Origin rugby league team shortly.

The Queensland Rugby League has called a media conference for midday in Brisbane (1300AEDT) to unveil the new coach.

It will be an interesting media conference as the QRL initially sought North Queensland Cowboys premiership coach Paul Green as the man to replace Mal Meninga at the helm, only to be knocked back by Green.

Walters has been a longtime assistant coach of the Maroons and has also been working as assistant to Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett in the NRL.

He will have very big shoes to fill after Meninga moved on to the Australian team job as Queensland will be bidding for a 10th series victory of NSW in 11 years in 2016.
